Child-Friendly Lahore workshop ft. Urban Kids

LSE Cities, Urban 95 Academy, Global Designing Cities Initiatives, Peacemakers Pakistani , Rukh Foundation, AEDCON

Designing Streets with KIDS! Placemaking for Children in Pakistan! YES. It’s finally happened! While It took some time to get the early childhood agenda rolling in Pakistan, I’m so happy I was able to pull it off. What started in 2023 with Van Leer Foundation and LSE Cities Urban 95 Academy, is now coming to life. I never imagined that one day in Pakistan, children would be taught about cities, streets, and reclaiming their public spaces. A huge thank you to Global Designing Cities Initiative for their technical support and for providing us with the tools to engage kids; Urban Foxes for their Placemaking for Inclusion Cookbook, an excellent resource for placemaking newbies like us. Day 1 of the workshop began with building the kids’ basic understanding of cities, teaching them how cities function, and the role of streets and public spaces, using GDCI kids engagement tools while also introducing the story of Jane Jacobs to the kids through Susan Hughes‘ storybook. Day 2 of the workshop was all about exploring what kids need in their streets, getting more into their feelings about their neighborhoods. This insight is crucial for designing spaces where kids feel safe, valued, and have a sense of belonging. This is just the beginning! Here’s to making cities more child-friendly! 🚸

Reimagining Shah Alam Market

Centre for Urban Informatics, Technology & Policy (CITY @ LUMS)

I contributed to this project during my role as research assistant at CITY at Lums. This study included evaluating accessibility across various transportation modes and the land uses surrounding the Shah Alam market, then examining details of road design, including sidewalks, crosswalks, and medians, as well as the condition of dedicated parking plazas and roadside parking facilities. Additionally, the market’s general usability and visual appeal were assessed through the lens of a complete street checklist, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of its urban fabric. A thorough traffic analysis, parking assessment, and traffic simulation using PTV Vissim were conducted to gauge the current level of service and forecast future traffic demands. Mobility solutions were explored. Recommendations included traffic calming measures such as dedicated pedestrian crossings and loading/unloading zones, as well as the promotion of green infrastructure to create a safer and more inviting space for pedestrians.

Roadcrossection: Before & After

Reimagining Thokar Niaz Baig

Centre for Urban Informatics, Technology & Policy (CITY @ LUMS)

The research thread on road safety at CITY at LU,S provided us with developing accident hotspots for Lahore. Thokar being the top accident hotspot in Lahore was used as a case study area for developing road safety interventions focused on pedestrian infrastructure and traffic calming measures. Hence, focused on interventions, thokar area was reimagined.
